Bee The LightAfter Jessa and I got married, we knew we wanted to do something to help support ourselves and our community that was wholesome for everyone involved – from the raw materials all the way to the folks who end up with the product. Before I met Jessa I lived for a time in an off-the-grid-in-the-city hospitality house called “The Downstream Project.” There was no electrical lighting in the house, so every night we lit up the beeswax candles, not just for fun or ambiance! It was a powerful and inspiring season of my life, and later, when Jessa and I were thinking of things we could do that met our list of criteria, beeswax candles came to mind. I got on craigslist and found a local beekeeper who was selling it by the block… and the rest is history!beethelight.com

Edelweiss IllustrationEdelweiss Illustration creates fantasy out of reality. The series presents regional animals drawn naturalistically but with anthropomorphic accoutrements and sometimes set in real, usually local, landscapes. The body of work combines graphite, ink, wash, and photomanipulation to showcase the sustainable interaction of nature, art, and technology. The end results are illustrations from stories not yet written. It is the artist’s hope that they will inspire the viewer to see the stories in their own natural environment and then tell them.edelweissillustration.weebly.com

Guido’s HeartIn July of 2022, Sandra Sohne-Johnston traveled to her home in Accra, Ghana to celebrate a number of family milestones. Her cousin gave her a Bolga basket as a gift. Following a series of conversations with weaver and designer Akolbila Richmond in his streetside shop, she learned how difficult it was for him to make ends meet. Recognizing his talent and drive, Sandra pledged to help him generate additional income by selling fifteen baskets to friends and family. Within days of advertising his products on her social media platforms, she received orders for close to 42 traditional Bolga Market Baskets and 5 laundry baskets. In the span of just three weeks, Akolbila earned more money than the average Ghanaian earns in a six-month period and generated enough work to employ approximately 20 weavers. In an effort to increase the visibility of his products and expand his market, Sandra founded Guido’s Heart. Her vision is to connect exceptional Ghanaian artisans like Akolbila Richmond with customers around the world who value high-quality, sustainable, handmade, and fair trade goods.

She named her business after her older brother, Guido who was an African software developer and proponent of open-source, co-founder of FOSSFA, the Free and Open Source Software Foundation for Africa, and Platform Strategy Manager for Microsoft until his death in 2008. He was an innovator who wanted to cultivate and nurture native talent. We are equally committed to nurturing and elevating the work of everyday Ghanaians. By providing talented Ghanaian artisans who design one-of-a-kind works of art with access to a global market, Guido’s Heart, is dedicated to providing each artisan with the ability to change the trajectory of their lives and the lives of their community members by gaining financial security and independence.

poppypointeWe empower people to create their art with threads. I’ve been stitching for over 40 years, and make something for family and friends each year. I opened the shop 3 years ago, and we’ve been able to reach multiple generations of stitchers. On top of empowerment, stitching is a mindful activity which can help with anxiety and depression. Every day, someone comes into the shop and shares how stitching got them through the pandemic. We hope to share this with your customers.poppypointe.com
RVA NaturalsI have products nurturing the imagination with natural provisions for the child and home. It is important for children to grow up simply, with as much rhythm as possible. Having items in the home made of natural materials helps the child feel connected to their outside playground. I mostly carry items made of wood, cotton, wool and beeswax. I do have some fun trinkets and jewelry though too for the older child. These are both handmade by me and retail items from around the world.
I have Waldorf inspired and eclectic items made of natural materials. Nurturing the imagination with provisions for the child and home. I want to show people their children can live a simple life without all the bells and whistles. Sharing simple toys and home essentials that help with the daily rhythm.

Sharon Lee ShowalterI love creating woolly things – mittens, felted bowls to hold bits of things, unique little things – and I’m a bit obsessed with toads! I knit little toads and am so happy making their little outfits and accessories while finding the perfect little vintage furniture for them! I also create notecards – toads of course! They’re my original sketch & watercolor designs.

I have always loved making things. I especially enjoy working with wool – knitting and felting. I create things that bring me joy, and I hope that others feel all the joy embedded in the fibers of my designs.

Snail Mail for KidsMy son was a struggling reader and didn’t have many friends. But….he loved his stuffed animal so much. So, I started sending him letters from his stuffed animals, which he loved! He felt important, he was reading and he learned about the world in an exciting way. So, a few years I decided to share those letters with kids around the world. I hired an illustrator who designed my letters with beautiful images and illustrations, made matching envelopes, matching stickers, secret codes and more. Now, we are sending weekly letters to kids around the world.sunnythemailsnail.com
