“I love that so much attention is given to the development of the whole person in Waldorf Education. My desire to have [my child] at Waldorf is intentional, as I seek a school that is non-denominational, but still builds a community rooted in collaboration and mutual respect, with care for our planet and society in general. I really love that there is an intention to preserve the traditional ways of learning, while incorporating so much creativity via art, craft, and music.” – current CWS grade school parent

Families choose Charlottesville Waldorf School because they are seeking an education that supports the full development of their child: intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. In an increasingly fast-paced and screen-saturated world, our approach offers a grounded, human-centered education rooted in meaningful learning and strong relationships.

A Whole-Child Approach to Education

At Charlottesville Waldorf School, academics are never separated from the development of creativity, movement, and emotional intelligence. Students engage deeply with subjects through storytelling, art, music, handwork, movement, and experiential learning, building curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Screen-Free Classrooms and a Hands-On Learning Environment

“We were very encouraged by the lack of screen time at CWS” – current CWS early childhood family

A defining feature of our program is our commitment to screen-free classrooms in early childhood and grades. Instead of digital devices, students engage directly with their learning through hands-on projects, artistic work, movement, and face-to-face collaboration. When computer work is introduced in middle school, the computer is another tool students can use rather than the medium by which all information is delivered.

This approach supports sustained attention, creativity, and social development, while allowing children to fully experience concepts through real-world interaction rather than passive screen-based input. Families often value this intentional environment as a counterbalance to the increasing presence of technology in daily life.

Developmentally Appropriate Learning

Our curriculum is intentionally designed to meet children where they are developmentally. Rather than rushing academic milestones, we focus on building strong foundations at the right time, supporting reading, writing, and math in ways that align with healthy child development.

Strong Relationships and a Close Community

Families value the continuity and care that comes from small class sizes and long-term teacher relationships. Students are known deeply as individuals, and families are part of a connected, supportive school community that spans years of shared growth and experience.

Learning Rooted in Creativity and Imagination

Imagination is central to how children learn at Charlottesville Waldorf School. Through storytelling, artistic work, and hands-on projects, students develop flexible thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to engage deeply with ideas.

Time in Nature and Meaningful Rhythms

Daily outdoor time, seasonal festivals, and a structured daily rhythm help children feel grounded and secure. Learning is connected to the natural world and the changing seasons, helping students experience education as something alive and meaningful.

A K–8 Experience Built on Continuity

Our K–8 program allows children to grow within a consistent and nurturing environment. This continuity fosters trust, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging: foundations that support both academic and personal development.
